B. Products
| Product | Indication | Clinical Status |
|---|---|---|
| Depocyt | Lymphomatous meningitis (Acute lymphomatous leukemia) | Market |
| Oncaspar | Acute lymphoblastic leukemia | Market |
| PEG-Camptothecin | Gastroesophageal cancer | Phase II |
| PEG-Intron | Chronic myelogenous leukemia and melanoma | Phase III |
| Various tumors | Phase I |
1. Depocyt
Depocyt is an injectable chemotherapeutic for the treatment of patients with lymphomatous meningitis. It is a sustained-release formulation of the chemotherapeutic agent, cytarabine or Ara-C.
2. Oncaspar
Oncaspar is a PEG-enhanced version of a naturally occurring enzyme called L-asparaginase used in conjunction with other chemotherapeutics to treat patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
3. Pegamotecan
Pegamotecan (Prothecan) is a PEG-enhanced version of camptothecin, a small molecule that is a potent anti-cancer compound in the class of topoisomerase I inhibitors. For many years camptothecin has been known to be a very cytotoxic agent but its low solubility and high toxicity has rendered the product not suitable for use. Two camptothecin derivatives, topotecan and irinotecan, have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of small-cell lung, ovarian and colorectal cancers. PEG and camptothecin were linked so that it forms a prodrug, i.e., a compound that is converted into the active drug within the body. The PEG component confers a long circulating half-life and allows the compound to accumulate in tumor sites.
4. PEG-Intron
PEG-Intro (PEG-alpha interferon) is a PEG-enhanced version of recombinant alpha-interferon product called Intron A. The PEG-Intron has an improved side effect profile as compared to Intron A.
